Abstract
This data represents LiDAR elevation information for Eau Claire County, Wisconsin in 2013. The following derivative products are available: bare earth points, classified LAS, 2-foot contours, hydro breaklines, a countywide DEM, and a tile DEMs. Also included for Eau Claire County are "boundary" (EauClaireCo_Boundary.shp.), "buidlings" (EC_Buildings.shp) and "intensity images" (Intensity_Images_Tiles). [Ayres Associates provided the County of Eau Claire (567 sq mi) with topographic mapping services in 2013. The LiDAR data was collected on May 13, 2013 using a Riegl sensor mounted in a fixed-wing aircraft. LiDAR data was collected to support FEMA accuracy standards and to support generation of 2-foot contours. The LiDAR data is tiled according to the PLSS sections. The LiDAR data was calibrated using information collected at the time of flight from GPS base stations on the ground and airborne GPS/IMU in the aircraft. The calibrated LiDAR data was processed to a classified point cloud, bare earth DTM, DEM, contours, breaklines, and intensity images. Waveform data was collected with the Riegl sensor over the project area.]
Purpose
This data is intended for reference and mapping purposes, and may be used for basic applications such as viewing, querying, and map output production, or to provide a basemap to support graphical overlays and analysis with other spatial data. For bare earth points: [The Bare Earth LAS was developed from a LiDAR flight flown in the Spring of 2013 as part of the Eau Claire County 2013 Project.] For classified LAS: [The 2013 Point Cloud files contain the total LiDAR point cloud. This dataset constitutes all classifications of lidar points.] For 2-foot contours: [The 2013 two-foot contours were developed as a derivative product for use in general surface modeling and depiction.] For hydro breaklines: [The 2013 breaklines dataset contains the hydrographic breaklines necessary for terrain surface development. This dataset establishes the deviation parameters for the development of derivative terrain data. Coupled with the classified lidar point cloud this data set is the 2013 digital terrain model.] For DEM: [The 2013 Bare Earth two-foot DEM was developed as a derivative product for use in general surface modeling and depiction.]
Supplemental Information
Data is available for download from: https://web.s3.wisc.edu/wsco-wisconsinview/lidar/ Detailed, original metadata accompanying this LiDAR data is available inside the ‘Metadata’ folder from WisconsinView. Bare Earth Points: Bare earth LiDAR is digital elevation data of the terrain surface consisting of irregularly spaced points, each with x/y location coordinates and z-value. The data have been subjected to automated and manual editing to remove vegetation, buildings, and other man-made structures. Classified LAS: Point classification using semi-automated techniques on the point cloud to assign the feature type associated with each point. Lidar points can be classified into a number of categories including bare earth or ground, top of canopy, and water. The different classes are defined using numeric integer codes in the LAS files. [Point Classes are as follows: 1 = Processed, Unclassified, 2 = Bare Earth Ground, 3 = Low vegetation, 4 = Medium vegetation, 5 = High vegetation, 6 = Building, 7 = Noise, 8 = Res. (Model keypoints), 9 = Water, 10 = Ignored Ground, 11 = Road, 12 = Res. (Overlap), 21 = High Points] Contours: A line through all contiguous points of equal elevation value. Contours are vector features used to represent the elevation of a landscape in a relatively familiar way. They are typically used for basemaps and general topographic representation. Derived Terrain: A vector data set composed of regularly spaced points and natural features such as ridges and breaklines. A DTM augments a DEM by including linear features of the bare-earth terrain. Hydro Breaklines: Breaklines maintain the definition of water-related features in an elevation model. They are used to capture linear discontinuities in the surface, lake shorelines, single-line drains for small rivers, and double-line drains for large rivers. Countywide Digital Elevation Model (DEM): A DEM represents the bare-Earth surface, removing all natural and built features. The dataset contains a single file covering the entire county. Tiled Digital Elevation Model (DEM): A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) represents the bare-Earth surface, removing all natural and built features. The data contains (possibly) hundreds of individual files available to download as small tiled geographic areas over the extent of an entire county. Digital Surface Model (DSM): A Digital Surface Model (DSM) captures both the natural and built/artificial features of the environment.
