Abstract
This data represents building inventory for northern Ashland County, Wisconsin in 2022. [This feature class is the product of a pilot project conducted by the Wisconsin State Cartographer's Office to create a freely distributable inventory of buildings and their attributes to serve a variety of purposes including to improve flood damage predictions. The goal was to include attributes describing the building itself, not the building's occupancy or use. The primary source of such data in Wisconsin, assessor data, is, in most cases, not available in a usable format without non-trivial cost or distribution restrictions. As a result, this publicly available building footprint feature class has little building-specific data. The project was funded by the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Office for Coastal Management under the Coastal Zone Management Act, Grant #NA20NOS4190092.]
Purpose
This data is intended for reference and mapping purposes, and may be used for basic applications such as viewing, querying, and map output production, or to provide a basemap to support graphical overlays and analysis with other spatial data. It appears to be a combination of City of Ashland work, with some project-specific attributes, and building polygons for the rest of the county (with few attributes populated). Statement
This building inventory is an assemblage of parts of 5 data sources: A polygon feature class of building footprints (Ashland_Buildings_2020), a polygon feature class of parcels (V7 Statewide Parcel Data), a list of tax exempt organizations (IRS Tax Exempt Organizations List), a point dataset of structures (National Structures Dataset), and a polygon dataset of building footprints (Open Street Map - Buildings). The Ashland County building footprints were joined with the parcel polygons. Multi-parcel building intersections and multi-building polygons were resolved to assign a building to a single parcel. Records from the remaining data sources were then spatially joined with the building footprint polygons. (Tax exempt organization records with physical addresses were geocoded before joining. Tax exempt organization records with Post Office Box addresses were not used.) The results of these joins were reviewed, assigning any un-joined or multi-joined records to the correct buildng footprint polygon.
