- Abstract
- Areas designated in an effort to divide the responsibility of fire suppression within the state. The intensive and extensive areas are at a higher natural risk for fires and the DNR has the statutory responsibility for fire suppression. The distinctions between intensive and extensive areas are defined in Administrative code (NR30).
- Purpose
- Protection Areas were originally extracted from the Fire Response Units (FRU) layer. Data was collected cooperatively by the Division of Forestry, Bureau of Forest Protection and created as a GIS layer by BTS. In May, 2008, the boundaries were re-digitized to more accurately reflect the true FPA boundaries using Administrative Code (NR 30.01 and NR 30.02) text description as well as field staff support.
