Abstract
This data represents LiDAR elevation information for 5 counties that are a part of the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission (SEWRPC): Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Walworth, Washington, and Waukesha counties, WI in 2015. The following derivative products are available: classified LAS, hydro breaklines, tiled DEM.[Geographical Extent: Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Walworth, Washington, and Waukesha Counties in southeastern Wisconsin, covering approximately 2,071 square miles.Dataset Description: The SEWRPC 2015 LiDAR project called for the Planning, Acquisition, processing and derivative products of LIDAR data to be collected at a nominal pulse spacing (NPS) of 0.7 meters. Project specifications are based on the U.S. Geological Survey National Geospatial Program Base LIDAR Specification, Version 1.2. The deliverable data is referenced to the following horizontal projection/datum system as specified in the contract: NAD83 (2011) State Plane Wisconson South Zone, US survey feet; NAVD88, US survey feet. LiDAR data was delivered in RAW flight line swath format, classifed LAS 1.4 files formated using a 10,000 feet by 10,000 feet tile system, hydro flattened breaklines in shapefile and geodatabase format, and raster 2 feet Digital Elevation Models (DEM) also using the same individual 10,000-feet x 10,000-feet tiles. Ground Conditions: LiDAR collection began in Spring 2015, while no snow was on the ground and rivers were at or below normal levels. In order to post process the LiDAR data to meet task order specifications, Quantum Spatial established a total of 227 QC points that were used to verify the accuracy of the LIDAR to known ground locations established throughout the project area.]
Purpose
This data is intended for reference and mapping purposes, and may be used for basic applications such as viewing, querying, and map output production, or to provide a basemap to support graphical overlays and analysis with other spatial data. [Classified LAS files are used to show the manually reviewed bare earth surface. This allows the user to create Breaklines and DEMs. The purpose of these lidar data was to produce high accuracy data for the inclussion of the USGS-3DEP program. These raw lidar point cloud data were used to create classified lidar LAS files, 3D breaklines, and hydro-flattened DEMs.]
Supplemental Information
Data is available for download from: https://web.s3.wisc.edu/wsco-wisconsinview/lidar/0_SEWRPC/SEWRPC_2015_5counties_3DEP_Delivery/ Detailed, original metadata accompanying this LiDAR data is available inside the ‘Metadata’ folder from WisconsinView. Classified LAS: Point classification using semi-automated techniques on the point cloud to assign the feature type associated with each point. Lidar points can be classified into a number of categories including bare earth or ground, top of canopy, and water. The different classes are defined using numeric integer codes in the LAS files. Hydro Breaklines: Breaklines maintain the definition of water-related features in an elevation model. They are used to capture linear discontinuities in the surface, lake shorelines, single-line drains for small rivers, and double-line drains for large rivers. Tiled Digital Elevation Model (DEM): A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) represents the bare-Earth surface, removing all natural and built features. The data contains (possibly) hundreds of individual files available to download as small tiled geographic areas over the extent of an entire county.
